Why it makes the list

A simply stunning harbourside hotel in beautiful St Mawes – The Idle Rocks has absolutely nailed luxurious yet laidback Cornish living.

It calls itself ‘your home by the sea’, and they really do create a warm, welcoming, sumptuously comfortable environment, bejewelled with special touches, elevated experiences, chic design and impeccable standards.

From bespoke cocktails and perfectly laid out bedrooms, to high-end tasting menus from their sensational chef and sea views to die for, there is nothing not to love at The Idle Rocks.

Sleeping

The 18 bedrooms are individually designed to perfectly complement the hotel’s incredible waterside setting and south-facing views across the water. Classic high-end luxury meets Cornish, coastal chic. With Hypnos beds and modern bathrooms, and little extras that make a stay here a perfect home-from-home retreat. Seaview rooms are show-stopping, with panoramic sea views across the Fal Estuary; an idyllic setting to lose hours watching the ever-changing light on the iconic sapphire blue St Mawes bay.

Grand Seaview Rooms are the largest and most luxurious rooms. Spacious, light and airy, with spectacular views. Seaview Rooms are generously sized with ocean views – some also feature gorgeous juliette balconies.

Two of the Harbour rooms, located in the adjoining cottage, are dog friendly, and welcome one small, well-behaved dog.
Village Hideaway Rooms are characterful and unique, with charming village views.
And there is one beautiful Seaview family room which can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children in a bunk bed.

dining

The spectacular waters’ edge location is one hell of a starting point for a dining destination, but under the leadership of Head Chef, formerly of Le Manoir, Dorian Janmaat, the restaurant offering at The Idle Rocks just got even more impressive. Focusing on locally sourced produce, Dorian and his team have designed a menu which celebrates local suppliers, fishermen and farmers. Dishes here are carefully curated, delicately balanced, and most importantly they taste divine. The front-of-house team do a superb job of creating a sophisticated yet informal atmosphere, and the bar staff serve up some of the best cocktails I’ve ever had in Cornwall. Dining at The Idle Rocks is nothing short of a delight – from delicious breakfasts and elegant cream teas, to elaborate, memorable, moreish tasting menus in the evening. Dorian Janmaat is making The Idle Rocks’ dining room one of the most exciting places to eat in Cornwall.
